After a pretty eventful April of birding and butterfly watching on Catahoula National Wildlife Refuge, I really dropped the ball by not visiting the refuge during May (well, except for one short visit to Willow Lake Unit when I was passing by). Those later couple of weeks of spring migration (first couple of weeks of May) can be some of the best birding on the refuge, so goodness only knows what I missed. But, I did get out the the refuge a few times over the summer. Below are bird lists for June, July, and August visits to Catahoula NWR, then lists for other wildlife.
   But first, some habitat shots...

 - Little River WMA - August, 2020

*********************
I have an unusual history with Little River WMA. I have visited this Grant Parish location on several dates between August of 2020 and August of 2023. Strangely, despite being familiar with nearby locations for much of my life, I had never gone to this WMA until that 2020 visit. I covered that visit in a blog post, but have neglected to complete posts I started for other visits. Well, after this most recent 2023 trip to the WMA I decided I should do a sort of 'proper introduction' to this location along with the account of this visit.

The Little River State Wildlife Management Area (WMA) has several separate tracts spread across eastern Grant and western La Salle Parishes (with one just barely slipping over the line into Rapides). However, the La Salle ones are, unless things have changed recently, inaccessible to the public, being down possibly defunct roads and surrounded by private land (and partially across a creek from the nearest road). These La Salle tracts are very small. They are in an area that I'd been to a number of times many years ago, presumably before they would have been part of the WMA. There's a decent-sized tract near Little River in the southeastern corner of Grant Parish that I haven't gotten to visit yet, though I started to on one or more occasions and hope to make it there later this year. There's also some small tract(s) along Little River in the north, downstream from Georgetown.
The largest tract, however, is the one that I'll be talking about in this post. It is located about halfway between Pollock and Georgetown, in Grant Parish. Roughly speaking, it is bordered by Camp Hardtner Road to the west, and Little River to the east, and extends from north of Sulphur Creek to south of Fish Creek. There are two main entrances into the interior of this "main" tract of Little WMA: a southern one at Fish Creek Road, and a northern one at JD Rambo Road. Both of those roads turn east off Camp Hardtner Road. This area can be accessed from US-165 by turning east onto Grover Atwell Road (directly across from end of LA-123), and going an estimated 2 or 3 miles east to Camp Hardtner Road.
If you are thinking of visiting this WMA, consult the LDWF website for the map and rules and regulations.

Generally speaking, the habitat in this tract of the WMA is divided between piney woods (mostly of a generic pine plantation variety, based on what I've seen) in the west, and the river bottoms of Little River in the east. The river bottoms are wooded, having the expected sort of hardwood timber. There's a number of small lakes, sloughs, and the like in the bottoms, providing areas of Bald Cypress and tupelo swamp. There's small areas of more diverse piney-wood and creek bottom hardwood type woods along the creeks that flow into the WMA.
There's a sharp westward bend in the river at Doughty Bluff, bringing the river up against the edge of the more upland piney-woods terrain at that point. There's (sort of) access to the river at the end of the road just past the bluff, and a primitive campsite on the high ground. There's also a primitive campsite and boat launch, and a path along part of the high river bank, at the east end of Fish Creek Road at Little River. As of this post, there's still large areas of this tract of the WMA that I haven't gone to yet (including the road that goes north from JD Rambo Road and all the stuff that's down there).

Both Little River and Fish Creek are on the list of Louisiana Scenic Rivers and Waterways.

Here's some habitat shots before continuing (pics are from 8/24/23 visit, unless otherwise noted)...

.......................................

On August 24, 2023, I birded driving, with numerous stops, the length of Fish Creek Road, as well as Fish Creek Camp Rd. (Trails End Rd.) up to the bridge, the road that goes to Devil Brake, and the part of Camp Hardtner Road between Grover Atwell Rd. and Fish Creek Rd. I walked the part of Trails End Road beyond the bridge, walked part of the path along the high river bank south of the Little River primitive campsite, and spent a long time standing around at Devil's Brake.
Considering the date, time of day, and the exceptional heat (94-106F.!) and ongoing drought, bird activity was actually pretty good. Well, such a statement can be deceiving. The songbirds were concentrated along waterways, with two busy spots along Fish Creek and a very busy spot at Devil Brake providing many of the day's birds. At Devil's Brake, I watched rough and scraggly-looking warblers, gnatcatchers, tanagers, flycatchers, chickadees, titmice, and vireos, mouth open like panting dogs, queue up (tempers sometimes flaring) at what must have been the most desirable spot to come down for a drink. The dry conditions and unusually high temperatures seemed to be taking their toll. Among the birds at this spot was a family group of Pine Warblers, probably a half a mile or so from the nearest likely breeding habitat. Water birds were also present at this shrinking-but-not-exceptionally-low little oxbow lake. This included White Ibises, as well as herons, egrets, Anhingas, and a heard-only Osprey that called many times from somewhere in the cypresses and tupelos toward the other side of the lake (hidden behind foliage from my vantage point).

The Butterfly list so far is quite modest (about 27 species), with nothing really unusual and many common/expected species still unrecorded.
.
Gulf Fritillary on the bank of Little River - 10/31/21
.

The list of Herps (Amphibians and Reptiles) is still quite short (is it really only 8?), but there's potential for a decent variety of species to be found at this location, given enough time and effort. The highlight so far is Mississippi Map Turtle (Graptemys pseudogeographica kohnii). I saw several of them lounging on branches of a fallen tree along the Grant Parish bank of Little River near the primitive campsite on October 31st, 2021.

The list of Mammals that I've found on the WMA so far is quite short (7).
.
Fox Squirrel - Devil's Brake, 8/31/23
.
The list of Fish species is still very short (about 8), though more fishing attempts should bump that up quite a bit. With the variety of aquatic habitats--spring water creeks of various sizes, a decent-sized river, small swampy lakes, sloughs, etc.--present on this WMA, there should be a fairly diverse suite of fish species present.
.
female Bluegill - Fish Creek - 8/24/21
.

Though short, the list of Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) that I've recorded there (10, I think) includes some fairly interesting species, including Fawn Darner, Dragonhunter, Amanda's Pennant, and Powdered Dancer.
.
Fawn Darner - Fish Creek, 8/24/21
.
Dragonhunter - Fish Creek at FC Camp Rd bridge - 8/6/21
.

A lot of work needs to be done to generate reasonable starter lists of wildflowers and other plants.
